There are many stories about the flute and these stories come from lots of different tribes. The flute story we have below is but one of these many stories.
A long time ago, there was an old man who lived alone. He had out lived all of his family, his wife, his children and so on. This old man became an ornery old bird. One day the old man became sick and this made him even more ornery and the more ornery he got the more sick he got. The people in the village started staying away from the old man.
The old man became so sick that he was close to dieing. A long, long time ago animals and people had the ability to talk to one another. One morning when the man woke up there was a woodpecker in his house who told him that he had some medicine to make him well. He told the old man to follow him down to a Cane break. Now, in those days the people would always try to set up the village near a Cane break on a river or large creek. Rivercane was very important. Rivercane was used for making baskets, in building housing, for blow guns, etc.
The old man followed the Woodpecker down to the Cane break. The Woodpecker told the old man to cut a piece of Rivercane and then the Woodpecker showed the old man where to place the holes by pecking them into the Rivercane. Then the Woodpecker taught the old man how to play the flute. He sang some songs and told the old man to learn these songs exactly as he sang them, and if he would play them everyday, in a short time he would be healed.
Now the people in his village started hearing this beautiful music come from the old man's house out side the village and they couldn't believe it. They went to the old man's house and there was the old man playing the songs the Woodpecker had taught him on the flute and he was healed.
That was the way the first flute was given to the people. It was given to us as a way for us to see the beauty in all things.
